SEBASTIAN

December 25th, 2010

He was given up twice for being a great cat but an unwanted one.  He is a 17 lb. black and white  Norwegian Forest cat  who was returned to the shelter after a couple of years of being a beloved pet.   Love didn’t survive his diagnosed diabetes which requires a special restrictive diet and twice daily insulin injections which he barely notices.   Staff schedules were changed to accommodate his timed injections without complaint because everyone loves Sebastian, with or without diabetes.  He is otherwise healthy, could use some exercise and drop a few pounds, but is a real charmer.

He needs a special  family who can afford his insulin (about $90 for a month and a half supply) and who has the willingness and ability to administer his easy scheduled injection and special diet.

WILDLIFE WISDOM

August 13th, 2008

FOR SAFETY SAKE – DO NOT HANDLE/TOUCH WILDLIFE WTHOUT GLOVES UNLESS YOU ARE A LICENSED WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR.

BABY WILDLIFE NEED TO BE WITH THEIR MOTHER FOR THEIR BEST CHANCE AT SURVIVAL.

A MOTHER DEER WILL LEAVE HER FAWN OUT IN THE OPEN FOR UP TO 12 HOURS WHILE SHE EATS.  SHE IS VERY NEARBY EVEN IF YOU CANNOT SEE HER.  IF THE FAWN HAS BEEN LEFT FOR MORE THAN 12 HOURS, CONTACT A WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR OR YOUR LOCAL HUMANE SOCIETY.

MOTHER RABBITS ONLY FEED THEIR BUNNIES LATE AT NIGHT AND LEAVE THEM ALONE ALL DAY LONG. DO NOT DISTURB THE NEST. IF THE NEST HAS BEEN DESTROYED, MAKE ONE AND FIX TWIGS SO YOU CAN TELL IF MOM HAS RETURNED TO THEM.  IF SHE HASN’T, CONTACT A WILDLIFE REHABILITOR OR YOUR LOCAL HUMANE SOCIETY.  BUNNIES WITHOUT A WHITE DOT ON THE TOP OF THEIR HEADS ARE OLD ENOUGH TO BE OUT ON THEIR OWN.

BABY BIRDS THAT HAVE FALLEN FROM THE NEST, NEED HELP GETTING BACK INTO THE NEST.  MOMMY AND DADDY BIRDS FRET WHEN THEY CAN’T GET TO THEIR YOUNG.  GENTLY PUT THEM BACK INTO THE NEST OR LEAVE THEM WHERE THE PARENTS CAN REACH THEM.  AS A LAST RESORT, CONTACT A WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR OR YOUR LOCAL HUMANE SOCIETY.

A POSSUM MOM THAT HAS BEEN HIT BY A CAR MAY HAVE BABIES IN HER POUCH  CAREFULLY REMOVE THEM, USE A TOWEL TO SIMULATE A POUCH AND  CONTACT A WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR OR YOUR LOCAL HUMANE SOCIETY IMMEDIATELY.

RACCOONS ARE NOCTURNAL BUT MAY BE CAUGHT IN DAYLIGHT IF DISTURBED.  KEEP AWAY AND NOTIFY THE POLICE IF THE RACCOON APPEARS SICK OR IS DISPLAYING ANY UNUSUAL BEHAVIOR.

BEARS LOVE BIRDFEEDERS.  DO NOT FEED WILD BIRDS FROM SPRING THROUGH FALL. ONLY FEED WILD BIRDS IN WINTER WHEN THE BEARS ARE SLEEPING.  KEEP GARBAGE CANS IN UNTIL PICKUP.  KEEP DOORS CLOSED. DO NOT ENCOURAGE CLOSE ENCOUNTERS.  AS IT WILL ULTIMATELY LEAD TO THEIR DEATH.

NUISANCE WILDLIFE: USE LOUD NOISES AND/OR AMMONIA SOAKED RAGS TO DISTURB THEM AND FORCE THEM TO MOVE OUT .  CALL AND HIRE A LICENSED NUISANCE WILDLIFE CONTROL PERSON TO SAFELY REMOVE THEM.
